MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY : BEAUTY IN SMALL THINGS

Some people asked me this question quite often; What is Macro photography ? Well, it is of course a field of photography which, technically produces 1:1 magnification of the objects. In other words, the objects you photograph will appear exactly the same size in your camera’s sensor. Feeling confused ? it’s alright though because the concept of Macro is quite complicated.  I’m not going to give you any tutorial or technique regarding Macro photography in this essay (tutorial on how to do it will be given in the future post :D). I’m just going give you the very basic introduction about macro photography and why you should try doing this field of photography.

Normally, when we photograph an object, the reflection of the object which enter the lens will be shrunk in the sensor (as in the picture below). However, using dedicated macro lens (or other macro technique), the reflection of the object will magnified at 1:1 or life-sized, giving the image much more detail and magnification. Because of this,
the objects of macro photography tends to be small objects such as flowers, insects, and many others.
in normal cases, the reflection of an object will be shrunk in the sensor

using dedicated Macro lens, the reflection will appear at the same size
as the actual object (magnification 1:1)

Macro photography may be the least favourite field of photography. The reason is that because we need a dedicated macro lens to do it, which is definitely not cheap and lack of variant. However, as time goes on, many alternative ways were found to accomodate this problem, which include the use of Reverse ring and Extension tube

Macro photography object does not have to be flower or insect,
it could be anything like a drop of water like above.

Is it fun ? Well, as I stated earlier that the objects of Macro photography are small things, then technically you can do this photography EVERYWHERE ! you don’t have to go to a certain faraway place to find an objects. You can look around and make everything around you be the object; it could be a penny on your table, a flower in your pot, a fly that come across your room, or even a drop of water, anything can be your object.

If you take life-sized macro photography, then you’ll be able to capture a whole lots of details. This enables us to see something small that normally can’t be seen with our eyes. For example; if we captured an image of a fly with 1:1 magnification, we will be able to see the details of its body structure or even its compound eyes’ details.

The spider is less than 1 cm in size, but Macro photography
allows us to see details of its body.

So yeah, Macro photography allows us to see another world, a micro world around us. It allows us to see colors and beauty of small things that we tend to ignore, that’s the fun part about Macro photography !  Of course, we are going to need a lot of patient (I mean, A LOT !), to do Macro photography and improves our skill, but everything had never been easy, right ? :)

See you in the next post on how to do Macro Photography !
